Use the true sloped area — run plan measurements through our roof area calculator first if you only have the footprint. 5% waste suits a simple gable; allow 7.5–10% where hips, valleys and cut-ups eat tiles.
Waste depends on the roof, not on a rule of thumb. A simple gable with square verges can come in around 5%. Hips, valleys, dormers, roof windows and heavy cutting push it to 7.5–10%, and diagonal or diminishing courses higher still. There is no single correct figure — look at the roof and judge it.

See how quoting worksTwo numbers do all the work: the sloped area of the roof, and how many tiles cover a square metre of it at the headlap you're using. Multiply them for the bare requirement, round up to a whole tile because you cannot buy part of one, then add waste for cutting and breakage and round up again. Rounding twice is deliberate — applying waste to a fractional requirement gives a slightly different number that is harder to explain to a merchant.

Tile coverage isn't a property of the tile alone — it's the tile at a particular headlap. The same plain tile covers 60 per m² at a 65 mm lap and needs more at the longer laps used for low pitches and exposed sites. Most bad orders come from using a coverage figure quoted at the wrong lap.
The presets here use standard nominal coverage for the common UK formats. For anything else — pantiles, slate-format interlocking, reclaimed tiles — take the coverage figure straight off the manufacturer or merchant datasheet and use the custom option.
